A natural park for the protection of walruses was created in Yamal

The reserve "Tiutei-Yakhinsky" with an area of 10,000 hectares was created in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug to preserve a unique walrus rookery.

Now exploration and mining of minerals are prohibited in this natural area, entry and parking of vehicles are prohibited, access of citizens is possible only by passes. A wide scientific study of the walrus rookery is planned for the coming years.

It is expected that the creation of a new nature protection zone will protect these animals from excessive human attention and give them additional protection.

The Atlantic walrus is a large marine mammal included in the Red Book of Russia and the list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The rookery at the mouth of the Tiutei-Yakha River in Yamal attracts about a thousand walruses, and their population is growing every year.
