Amsterdam wants to ban tourists from using marijuana
Amsterdam authorities are discussing the possibility of introducing a ban for tourists to visit "coffee shops" — special establishments selling cannabis.
Mayor Femke Halsema said that the new ban will help fight crime, including the spread of heavy drugs.
According to the Amsterdam City Hall, 100 of the 166 Amsterdam coffee shops serve mainly tourists.
Recall, the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie, VVD) Two years ago, she proposed banning tourists from using marijuana, noting that "Amsterdam is too beautiful for this, and its residents deserve better." The Mayor's office of the capital of the Netherlands discussed this issue a year ago.
