Due to the drought, "hungry stones" appeared in the rivers of Europe
Due to the shallowing of rivers in the Czech Republic and Germany, the so-called "hungry stones" became visible. They remind of the times of severe droughts, which were the cause of crop failures and, as a result, famine.
One such stone, for example, was found in the shallow bed of the Elbe River. It has an inscription made in 1616: "If you see me, cry."
Earlier it was reported that the level of France's largest river, the Loire, fell to a historic low. Navigable since the XV century, the river in the Orleans area can now be easily crossed on foot. In Toulouse, the Garonne has become shallow on record, the Drome River no longer flows into the Rhone near Valence, because it has dried up.
In Germany, on the Rhine River last Friday, near the town of Kube, the water level fell to 42 cm.
Shallowing of rivers occurred due to drought caused by abnormally high air temperatures. For example, on Friday, August 12, +41.5 ° C was observed in Spanish Zaragoza, +40.7 ° C — in the south of France, above +39 °C was in Toulouse and almost +34 ° C in Italian Horta.
