In Amsterdam, smoking marijuana will be banned in the Red Light District

Amsterdam authorities have decided to ban smoking marijuana on the streets of the Red Light District because of complaints from locals about the behavior of tourists.

To increase security on the streets of the city, a ban on alcohol consumption in public places and restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages from Thursday to Sunday were previously introduced. Now the authorities will ban smoking marijuana in the Red Light District, and also plan to ban the sale of cannabis takeaway.

The mayor's office explains such steps as "the need to give residents more peace of mind at night." Residents of the central part of the city are dissatisfied with the influx of tourists after the removal of covid restrictions. In total, about 18 million people visited Amsterdam in 2022.
