In India, a bridge collapsed: more than 90 people were killed
At least 91 people were killed when a cable-stayed bridge collapsed in the Indian state of Gujarat.
It is clarified that the tragedy occurred on a bridge built more than 140 years ago on the Machehu dam near the town of Morbi. The bridge has been closed for the last two years for reconstruction and opened just four days ago. As it became known, a private company was engaged in the repair, and the construction was opened without a certificate of suitability.
At the time of the collapse, more than 500 people, including children, were on the bridge. As a result, over 350 were in the water. Of these, 91 people were killed, about 70 were injured and taken to hospitals.
Rendering assistance to those who fell into the river was complicated by the strong current and night time. Rescuers and firefighters from Morbi and surrounding towns arrived at the scene.
