Palm trees are dying massively in Sochi

Sochi risks losing the appearance of a subtropical resort over the next five years due to the mass death of palm trees.

According to scientist Boris Tuniev, palm trees in Sochi are dying due to the high activity of the driller butterfly. Now malicious butterflies live in almost all areas of the city — even on the central streets.

The area of plant damage by the pest is becoming more and more — butterflies have already begun to migrate from city streets to the villages of Lazarevskoye, Sergey-Pole, Bestuzhevskoye.

All palm trees with woolly trunks suffer from the insect, including Chinese fan and European. And palm trees with smooth trunks are eaten by a weevil. If the plants are not treated with special means in time, the resort will soon lose its subtropical appearance.
