Songkran was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List

The Songkran holiday — Thai New Year — has been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. This was stated by the Thai Foreign Ministry.

The decision was made on December 6, 2023 during the XVIII session of the intergovernmental committee for the Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the meeting was held in Kasan (Botswana).

Thailand applied for the inclusion of Songkran in this list in 2020. In addition to Songkran, the Thai Khon Theater, Thai traditional massage and the Nora Dance Theater have been recognized as such objects in recent years.
