The statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro was struck by lightning

On February 11, in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), lightning struck the top of the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer.

The incident occurred during a thunderstorm that broke out late the night before. The blow landed on the sculpture's head. Fortunately, the statue was not damaged.

The statue of Jesus Christ is located on the top of the mountain, at an altitude of more than 700 m. According to the National Institute for Space Research, the sculpture receives an average of six lightning strikes a year. In 2014, after another such blow, it had to be repaired - the tip of the thumb on the statue's right hand broke off. At the same time, it was decided to install additional lightning rods.
